The Quijos river is set to become Ecuador's premier white water trip with mile after mile of class IV-IV+ rapids and spectacular jungle scenery. Expect to run more white water in a day than you'd do in two days elsewhere. The Quijos river is also for Kayakers a dream river..! If y ou are fanatic of this sports you shoudn´t miss this full adrenaline experience. The best time to dip your paddle depend on how hard you want to push yourself. For experts we offer this river tours from September to March, at this time you can expecthigh flows and continuous whitewater rapids until class V. the rest of the year the Qijos offers plenty of action for every body and temperatures are also confortabler. However this rafting trip we recommend for rafters that are confident swimmers. No wimps please!
A succulent traditional breakfast will delight our morning. Subsequently, we must prepare our gear and get ready to visit the Quijos Valley. On arrival you’ll be ssued with wetsuits, life jackets and helmets. After a short drive to the put-in the Trip Leader will give a thorough safety briefing and conduct a swim test. Then you’ll split into groups for an intensive in-boat paddle practice with your guide. Once we set off we’re straight into the action but with some easier rapids to warm up. Along the way we’ll stop for a riverside picnic lunch. In the afternoon we’ll raft through the first canyons of the Quijos running big, technical rapids including “El Toro” and the spectacular Linares canyon. At the end of the day we pull the boats into shore and take a short ten-minute walk up to the lodge where we have cold beer, hot showers and a good meal waiting for us. Breakfast. Hiking into Los Tayos Caves where you can see the Tayos birds that are living in these amazing caves. In the afternoon visit San Rafael waterfall, the highest waterfall in Ecuador (150 m high). This spectacular waterfall is located where the Quijos river enters the mouth of the Coca river. You’ll take a short trek, approximately 15 minutes to the falls. On a clear day, from the river Reventador you will see the active volcano of that same name and you may see the explosions and lava flows.
From the take-out we’ll head back to Quito. (B, L).
Departure from Quito by private transportation. Once in Bellavista Reserve you will have a lot of time to hike upstream to the Hidden Falls or equally have a leisurely stroll on a couple of our easy trails, we have lots of trail exploration opportunities to choose from! If you want to look for the stunning Plate-billed Mountain-Toucan, admire the orchids and epiphytes, or simply relax in a hammock, in the whirring company of fearless hummingbirds. Bellavista is a great place to commune with nature and yourself. Lunch, dinner and accommodation.
Breakfast. The day starts when we pick you up from Nanegalito. We travel west down through beautiful cloud forest to the shores of the river. Once on the river, you can expect both the action of thrilling whitewater and the tranquility of drifting silently through tropical rainforest. So while you’re guaranteed to get wet you’ll also have the opportunity to be absorbed by the sounds of the forest and to see wildlife up close from our mobile “viewing platform”. Rafting time approx. 4½ hrs (48 km).
The day starts when we pick you up from our Meeting Point at Crossroads Café and Hostel (6.30 am corner of Foch y Juan León Mera). We travel west down through beautiful cloud forest to the shores of the river. Once on the river you can expect both the action of thrilling whitewater and the tranquility of drifting silently through tropical rainforests. So while you´re guaranteed to get wet you´ll also have the opportunity to be absorbed by the sounds of the forest and to see wildlife up close from our mobile “viewing platform”. Rafting time approx 3 to. 3½ hrs.
At the end of the day we will transfer you to hacienda El Porvenir where a delicious supper awaits us. Overnight in a Machai Room.
After a delicious hacienda breakfast, we will head to Santa Rita Ecological Reserve, visitors center. We begin visiting the interpretation center, where we will learn about the ecosystem of the area. Then we will wear the equipment to do “El Salto Canyon Canopy tour". After a half and hour walk we will do our first “fly”. We will cross five cables, that will take us back to the visitors Center. Here we will have our pic-nic lunch. In the afternoon we hike to impressive 90 meters Pita waterfall . After the hike, we return to Quito.
